RC verification: what to check before buying a used vehicle
A registration certificate lookup tells you the owner, make, model, age, insurance and blacklist status of a vehicle. Read it in this order.

Owner and chassis match
Start with the registered owner name and the chassis and engine numbers. Compare the chassis and engine against the physical vehicle: these are stamped on the body and block. A mismatch here ends the conversation.
The owner name must match the person selling it, or there must be a clear chain (the RC still shows a previous owner because transfer is pending).
Age, fuel and fitness
Registration date gives you the true age, which matters for resale value and for city bans on older diesels. The fuel type and emission norm tell you whether the vehicle can be driven in restricted zones. Fitness (for commercial vehicles) and the RC expiry date tell you whether it is currently legal to drive.
Insurance, hypothecation and blacklist
An active insurance policy is legally required; an expired one is a negotiating point and a risk. Hypothecation shows a loan is still open, and you cannot get a clean transfer until the financier issues a no-objection. A blacklist or on-hold flag (theft, court order) is a stop signal.
Then pull the challans
A separate challan lookup shows pending and disposed traffic violations. A stack of unpaid challans transfers headaches to the new owner and sometimes blocks the RC transfer itself.
