Pending vs disposed
A challan lookup returns both pending (unpaid) and disposed (paid or adjudicated) violations. Pending challans are a direct liability, and many states now block RC transfer until they are cleared. Disposed challans tell you about driving behaviour if you are buying from an individual.
Fleet intake
When a leasing company or aggregator takes a vehicle back and re-allocates it, an unpaid challan from the previous driver can surface weeks later as a court notice. Running the check at intake, and again at re-allocation, keeps the liability with the right party.
